Palazzo Vecchio

Palazzo Vecchio ( The Old Palace) is located in Signoria square in Florence. The palace is the seat of the Mayor of Florence and seat of some municipal offices. At the beginning the Palace's name was Priori Palace, then it changed into Signoria Palace, as the politic institution ( "signoria" was the name given to a lordship in many of the italian city states of the period); but when in 1540 Cosimo I de'Medici called Il Vecchio (The Old) chose it as his new residence the name was changed again into Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace); at the end it was called Palazzo Vecchio (the Old Palace) because Cosimo chose the Pitti Palace as his new residence.
Under Cosimo the Palace was enlarged by Vasari to satisfy the Ducal court's needs. When Cosimo moved to Pitti Palace he asked Vasari to build a corridor. The so-called Vasarian Corridor connects the new residence with old one and with the Uffizi, which are located next to Palazzo Vecchio, and were the seat of the government administration and the magistracies ( the word Uffizi originally meant "offices").
During our guided visit in Florence we've learned something new about Sala dei Cinquecento ( The Five Hundred's Hall). The hall was commissioned by Savonarola that replaced the Medici's family and he wanted to use this hall as the Main Council's seat. The hall was decorated at the beginning by Leonardo and Michelangelo but Vasari completed their paintings and he decorated the ceiling with 39 chests of drawers painted with important images like Florence's neighborhoods and the Cosimo's request. On the walls there are frescoes representing the victories of Florence against Pisa and Siena. The hall was the Parliament's seat when Florence was the capital of the Italian Kingdom (1865-1871). Another thing that we learned is when we visited the Maps and Wardrobe's room. The room was designed by Vasari and the wardrobe's door are decorated with 53 maps: these maps are oil paintings made by Ignazio Danti and Stefano Buonsignori. In the centre of the room there is the Mappa Mundi (globe) the biggest one in its time. A curiosity of this room is that behind some of the wardrobe's door there are secrets passages like the one that leads you to the Bianca Cappello's changing room, Francesco I de'Medici's second wife.A feature of this room is a little window protected by a grate where you can look inside the Five Hundred's Hall and nobody can see you!
